As technology turnover accelerates, so does electronic waste. For businesses, knowing how to properly recycle IT equipment isn’t just responsible—it’s legally and environmentally necessary.
In this guide, we’ll explain what qualifies as e-waste, what items can be recycled, and how your company can stay compliant while supporting sustainability.
What Counts as E-Waste?
E-waste refers to any electronic device that’s outdated, broken, or no longer in use.
This includes:
- Desktop and laptop computers
- Monitors and displays
- Servers and storage arrays
- Networking gear (routers, switches, modems)
- Phones, tablets, and mobile devices
- Cables, keyboards, and peripherals
If it has a plug, battery, or circuit board—it’s e-waste.
What Can Be Recycled?
Most IT equipment can be safely dismantled, sorted, and recycled by a certified e-waste recycler. Common recyclable items include:
- Hard drives and SSDs
- Memory chips and processors
- Power supplies and fans
- Aluminum/steel enclosures
- Copper wiring
- Plastic components
IITS follows strict guidelines for environmental compliance and safe material recovery. Learn more about our recycling process here.
What Can’t Be Recycled (Easily)?
Some items require special handling or may not be accepted everywhere:
- CRT monitors (contain hazardous materials)
- Non-tech office equipment (like furniture or printers with toner)
- Many recyclers can’t recycle certain batteries (such as lithium-ion). Lucky for you, IITS is R2v3 certified so we take all batteries!
Always check with your recycler for a full list of accepted items—and never throw electronics in the regular trash.
Why E-Waste Compliance Matters
Improper disposal of e-waste can:
- Lead to environmental pollution
- Violate local/state regulations
- Damage your brand’s reputation
Working with IITS ensures your equipment is tracked, handled, and recycled responsibly—and you’ll receive documentation to prove it.
